II. CaTS Updates A. CaTS is investigating plans for a new campus e-mail and calendaring system recommended by Gartner Group, an organization that provides clients with the research and consulting services required to drive the efficient and effective use of IT. CaTS staff is in the process of evaluating the Novell NetMail 3.1 system. B. Reduced Sign-On/Single Sign-On Project - This project will combine Internet access, WebCT, e-mail and Novell log-in using only one password. CaTS hopes to have this available in the student computer labs by Fall Quarter 2002. C. BYOPC (Bring Your Own Personal Computer) - As the Library Annex 008 Lab is too small for regular lab use, CaTS will be providing space with desks and chairs with wireless and open wired ports for students needing a place to bring their Mac or PC computers. This will be available Winter quarter 2003. D. Going Paperless - Beginning July 2002, CaTS will no longer print FAS reports centrally. These reports will be accessible electronically in the FDS system. Beginning Fall Quarter 2002, all Human Resources reports will only be available electronically, with the eventual elimination of more paper reports to follow. E. SecurID - This system was originally implemented to allow network access to student records in a very secure manner. The company offering this licensed product has changed its pricing philosophy and the university can no longer afford to use the product. Therefore, after investigating current security issues, CaTS feels it can provide as secure an environment as is needed without the SecurID product. F. On August 6, 2002 the student modem pool will be increased from 184 to 207. G. CaTS is in the process of replacing equipment in the student labs. Fifty of the machines are above the recommended standards and will be re-deployed after upgrading the memory. The Provost will determine who will receive these machines. UPDATE: It was decided to give 25 machines to Lake Campus and 25 machines to CoLA. H. As the campus license agreement will expire at the end of October 2003, Microsoft has offered a 2-year transition plan which consists of the first year 30% reduction in costs, second year 15% reduction and third year will be charged full fare. Home use for employees will only cover Microsoft Office. Therefore, CaTS is considering licensing only Office for employees with computers and Office and FrontPage for students. II. Library Updates III. CTL Updates The new location for future UTC meetings will be the conference room in 267 University Hall.
