The committee unanimously approved the new policy changes.

Next week there will be a new University main web page.

III. Distance Learning Tech Plan Presentation - Dan DeStephen
Dan discussed the draft of the DL Strategic Plan 2001-2006 and the Executive Summary. During the discussion of the possible implementation of this plan, the Provost noted that the funds for the DL Strategic Plan may or may not be available depending on University budget cuts over the next several years. Provost Moore also noted the University is in its fourth year of the present six-year University Technology Plan and suggested drafting the next plan.

IV. Electronic Records Retention - Bessie Karras
Bessie Karras, University Records Manager, gave a presentation to the committee regarding the University retention schedule for electronic records and files and the importance of managing this information.

V. STAC Information -  Pat Walker
Pat discussed the new service initiated by the College of Education and Human Services & University Libraries. The Student Technology Assistance Center is a pilot project for the current academic year. The center will provide WSU students a place to develop essential information technology skills and is located at 116B Allyn Hall. Assistance is available on a walk-in or appointment basis.

VI. Migration to Internet Explorer & Outlook Express -  Larry Fox
Larry Fox discussed CaTS recommendation to migrate to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6.0. This process will be piloted in the CaTS department initially and beginning January, 2002, these changes will also be made to all new Omni Tech computers. Users will still be able to use Netscape, if desired, as CaTS will support both products. There will be no cost to users to change to this product.

Another advantage with Internet Explorer versus Netscape is that many enhancements being made at OhioLink do not work well under Netscape.

Below are two questions asked at the meeting which needed to be researched before being answered.

1) Can the Outlook Express address book be saved so that the same address book is available at home and at work?
Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book. A user may export the address book contents to a file and in turn import the contents on another machine.

2) Why Outlook Express versus Outlook?
As far as the handling of e-mail messages, Outlook and Outlook Express function very similarly. However, Outlook includes many features such as calendaring, time and project management, and tracking. Many of these features are dependant on the availability of Microsoft Exchange servers on the back end. As they would not function without the server-side component, and considering that the University has deployed applications to server those needs, Outlook Express was the best match.

CaTS is continuously reviewing new products in this area and assessing their usefulness for the University.

VI. Other - Bonnie Mathies
Bonnie Mathies distributed copies of the College of Education and Human Services Technology Plan 2001.

The next UTC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 8, 2001 from 3:00p.m.-5:00p.m. in E157 Student Union.
