Wright State University University Technology Committee

UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTTEE
MEETING MINUTES
February 8, 2001

Attendees:  Chuck Taylor, Paul Hernandez, Bonnie Mathies, Andy Montesano, Dan DeStephen, Terri Klaus, Barbara Denison, Vicki Montavon, Todd Brittingham (for David Sauter), Carol Holdcraft (for Jan Belcher), Donna Hamilton, Jeff Vernooy, George Frey, Tom Bazzoli, David Grossie, Kathleen Glaus.

 I. Approval of Minutes of Latest Meeting
There was one addition to last month’s minutes.  Although George Frey was in attendance at the January meeting, his name was not included in the list of attendees. With this change, the minutes were approved.

II. Presentation on Web Statistics -  Donna Hamilton
Donna reviewed the final results/statistics from the November 2000 Web Visitor Survey. To view these results, visit WSU’s website at: http://www.wright.edu/web/survey/

III. Dial-in Problems - Paul Hernandez
Currently the university has 192 modems available to students and 36 modems for faculty and staff.  Due to the fact that many faculty are receiving busy signals when dialing in to campus between the hours of 6:00p.m. – 12:00 midnight, equipment has been ordered to upgrade the faculty/staff modem pool with an additional 23 modems.  Paul proposed to the committee dividing the total 59 modems into two pools – 44 for faculty and 15 for staff.  Also suggested was cutting down the time duration on the staff-only modems from 2 hours to 30-60 minutes. After a brief discussion it was decided to create the two modem pools and leave the time duration for both faculty and staff at 2 hours until further notice.

IV. Electronic Classroom Thefts - Dan DeStephen
Dan reported that some of the electronic classrooms have been experiencing an increase in thefts/vandalism.  CTL has been working closely with Public Safety to make sure these classroom doors are locked between approximately 10:00p.m. – 8:00a.m.  There is no evidence of doors being vandalized, therefore this seems to occur during open classroom hours.  A joint effort is being made to develop deterrents to this problem.

 V. New Technology in Allyn Hall - Bonnie Mathies
Bonnie discussed some of the technological additions made to Allyn Hall during the renovation process, which include:

1.      Room 270 is ready for distance learning classes

2.      The 2nd floor is set up for wireless use; the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors are scheduled to become wireless in the near future

3.      The production lab will become a multimedia production lab

4.      Video-conferencing is available in the 3rd floor conference room now with the same plans for the 1st and 4th floor conference rooms

5.      The CaTS lab and the educational research center lab are located on the 2nd floor

As the Wright State University representative to the Southwestern Advisory Group for the Ohio Learning Network, Bonnie distributed information she received during a meeting with this group.

  1. “Current Degrees and Certificates from OLN institutions” This list can be accessed at http://www.oln.org under “Degrees & Certificates”.

  2. “Progress Report on Educational Technology” - a profile on the state of Ohio’s progress published by the U.S. Department of Education.  Other information on this subject can be found at http://www.ed.gov/Technology/

VI. Status of Distance Learning - Dan DeStephen
1.      Dan distributed and reviewed a report on the current status of distance learning classes at WSU.  This report has been presented to the Council of Deans and Faculty Senate.

2.   Dan also distributed copies of the WSU Interactive Video Distance Learning Protocols and a schedule of lead times established by the Center for Teaching & Learning which will be necessary to ensure problem-free interactive distance learning classes. He asked the committee to review this information for discussion at the next meeting.

VII. Other Announcements
On April 5, College of Liberal Arts has asked Apple Computer to give a presentation on the subject of making desktop movies for the classroom and wireless technology. This will be open to the public.

Donna Hamilton announced the completion of the first web accessibility workshop in January with 30 people in attendance.  A second workshop is planned for February, with two more scheduled for Spring Quarter.  Comments from the attendees were very favorable.

George Frey is working on a report which will discuss the impact electronic classrooms have had on traditional delivery of computers to classrooms.   George will have a report for the committee at the next meeting.

The next meeting of the UTC committee will be Thursday, March 8, 2001 in E157 Student Union from 3:00 – 5:00p.m.
