UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTTEE ATTENDANCE: Chuck Taylor, Jeff Vernooy, Terry Anderson, Dave Sauter, Terri Klaus, Cindy Young, Tom Sav, Barbara Denison, Noel Nussbaum, Vicki Montavon I. Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting Minutes of the June 8, 2000 UTC meeting were approved. II. Revision of Wright Way Policy 3002 (Responsible Use of University Computing Resources) Vicki Montavon distributed copies of a "draft" revision of the original policy 3002 dated June, 1992. The Provost requested an updated version of the original policy for responsible use of computing resources by employees due to the increased use of computers and university resources. Vicki discussed the additions/changes to the original policy and then asked the members for their endorsement. The committee voted unanimously to endorse the revised policy. Vicki noted that she would check on several questions raised by Tom Sav regarding language used in the policy. III. Update on Distance Learning Classes A. Terri Klaus handed out a proposed "Draft Policy on the Hosting of Web-Based Distance Learning and Web-Enhanced Courses" (attachment 3) for the members to review and be prepared to discuss at the October meeting. B. Sally Clayton has invited an attorney to speak on campus to discuss copyright issues. This session is will take place on Thursday, October 19, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. and open to the public. IV. Network Security Audit A. Terry Anderson reported to the UTC members that CaTS will be working with Enterprise Network Security Services to perform a security audit for both data and voice systems. The purpose of the audit it to perform a risk assessment and identify any weaknesses in the university's systems. Their findings will enable CaTS to correct any weaknesses and develop an appropriate security policy. In early October, the audit of internal scans of CaTS systems will begin, with scans of the university network and telephones to begin in mid-October. A general announcement will be made to the university community to inform them of the audit prior to its beginning. B. In a prior UTC meeting, it was announced that a new web-based service would soon be available to students who have forgotten the passwords to their university accounts will be able to reset them via the web. In order to do this, another means of authentication was needed. It was decided to use the existing student ID and PIN used for Raider Express and ROX. For security purposes, beginning November 20th, students will be required to select a new PIN before they will be permitted to use either Raider Express or ROX services. A multi-level strategy to notify the students of this change will be implemented. V. Other Business At the latest UTC meeting, Paul Hernandez discussed the use of social security numbers to identify students. As an update, Dave Sauter announced that beginning next week, class lists will begin using only the last 5 digits of students SSNs. The next scheduled meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, 2000 from 3:00 - 5:00p.m. in E157 of the Student Union.
