UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTTEE
MEETING MINUTES
June 8, 2000
PRESENT
Perry Moore, Noel Nussbaum, Chuck Taylor, Jeff
Vernooy, David Grossie, Barbara Denison, Vicky Montavon,
Bonnie Mathies, Paul Hernandez, Terry Anderson, Terri Klaus,
Dan DeStephen, and Dave Sauter.
I. INTERNET 2 RESEARCH PRESENTATION
Dr. Mitch Wolff gave a presentation about the I2 project
titled "Unsteady Aerodynamics of Gas Turbine Jet Engines".
He is the principal investigator on this project with
professors from AFIT, UC and UD currently involved. The
project has both computational and experimental components.
The computational work involves utilizing several 3-D CFD
models for predicting unsteady gas turbine vane/blade
interaction flow physics. On the experimental side, the
team is working closely with AFRL's Compressor Aero Research
Lab (CARL) to make high speed flow measurements. I2 will be
utilized by the various researchers to communicate the
massive amounts of data acquired both experimentally and
computationally. Finally, Dr. Wolff is investigating the
potential for massive parallel computing over the I2
network. Bonnie Mathies thanked Dr Wolff for the information
and requested more be presented in the future. Paul
Hernandez announced that other researchers will be invited
to attend future UTC meetings.
II. CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING UPDATE
Dan DeStephen
Updated the committee on the status of Allyn Hall
classrooms. By the beginning of Fall Quarter, seven of the
classrooms will be electronic with the rest having
traditional audio/video equipment and the capability to
become electronic classrooms in the future. One of the seven
electronic rooms will be designed as a distance education
classroom.
Terri Klaus
- Gave a brief update on distance education projects for
academic year 99-00 and forecasted projects for year 00-01
(see attachment).
- An announcement was mailed this week informing the campus
community of the transition to WebCT.
- A new version of WebCT will be released in July - training
will be available. WebCT training is taking place due to
requests from College of Engineering
.
- Advanced WebCT training will take place June 16-17.
- Although the two grants applied for to the Ohio Learning
Network were rejected, applications will continue to be
submitted for these types of grants.
III. CATS UPDATE
Paul Hernandez
- All T-1s have been removed and we are running on the new
T-3.
- The Abilene application has been accepted as of Monday,
June 12. We are officially a member of Abilene and will be
using the high-speed backbone across the country.
- Due to inappropriate use of Internet activity, excessive
bandwidth is being used which interferes with many
activities across campus including distance learning, etc.
Examples are listening to Internet music and "pay-to-surf"
on individual websites. The Provost requested further
discussion before notifying the campus community regarding
these abusive bandwidth practices.
- Due to excessive use of printers in the CaTS labs, a
policy change has been announced. All UNIX laser printers
will produce four-pages-per-side, double-sided-page copies.
There will be a charge to the user for any other requests.
This will go into effect within the next month.
Terry Anderson
IV. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS AND STUDENT IDS DISCUSSION
Paul Hernandez reported on a discussion by the Board of
Regents at a recent Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC)
meeting in Columbus. Within the next few years, the State
of Ohio will require social security numbers NOT be used to
identify students. As this change will affect the
university significantly, CaTS is beginning to evaluate
replacement systems. In the interim, discussions are
on-going to limit the use of SSNs whenever possible. Dave
Sauter, Registrar, also announced that social security
numbers will not be printed on class lists and starting Fall
Quarter, e-mail addresses will be on class lists. However,
social security numbers will still be on grade sheets.
V. UTC FACULTY CHAIR ELECTION
Barbara Denison announced that although there was not a
designated time limit on her term as Faculty Co-Chair of the
University Technology Committee, she suggested nominations
be accepted for a new faculty member to continue as
Co-Chair. Nominated by Paul Hernandez, seconded by Barbara
Denison and a unanimous vote by members of the committee,
Chuck Taylor will begin his term as of September 7, 2000.
Provost Moore expressed his appreciation to Barbara for her
efforts during her term of office.
THE NEXT MEETING IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR JULY 13.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS WILL BE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE IF THIS
MEETING WILL BE HELD.
