UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTTEE
MEETING MINUTES
March 9, 2000
Along with twelve members of the University Technology
Committee in attendance for today's meeting were fourteen
faculty and staff interested in the information being
presented by Doug Gale, Director of OARnet, and Dr. Bruce
Berra, Director of WSU Information Technology Research
Institute.
I. Doug Gale discussed some of the strategic issues in
communication for higher education in Ohio that will need to
be resolved over the next four years.
- Increased usage of bandwidth
- Learn to manage use of bandwidth
- Cost of bandwidth
- Transition to Internet 2

II. Dr. Bruce Berra gave a brief history on the inception of
the Information Technology Research Institute (ITRI) as well
as a discussion on the technologies being studied by the
ITRI. The current ITRI mission is to:
- Conduct basic and applied research
- Conduct industrially relevant research and development
- Reduce time for research results to reach the marketplace
The ITRI goals for the next three to five years:
- Develop $4 million of research per year
- Increase research with Wright Patterson Air Force Base
- Work with Ohio's IT Alliance and local industry
- Solidify a sustaining budget for the next five years

III. Center for Teaching and Learning
A) Terri Klaus discussed some of the planned WebCT
activities and training sessions:
- Twenty-two faculty using Top Class attended a WebCT
demonstration.
- WebCT systems administration training was held on March
1. This was open to outside universities and state
institutions.
- April 7-8 - there will be the first of four 2-day training
sessions for faculty presently using TopClass.
- June 16-17 - The second session will be held
- March 23-24 - WebCT support training for CaTS Help Desk
and CTL staff
- April 5 & 12 - WebCT training for Rehabilitation
Counseling Faculty
- Chris Roberts, CTL Instructional Designer, will attend
WebCT training at Ohio State University in order to become a
certified WebCT trainer.
- The official rollout of WebCT will be Fall Quarter, 2000.
B) George Frey updated the committee on other
video-conferencing issues currently underway in CTL.
IV. CaTS Update - Paul Hernandez
- Reminder: Firewall logging goes into effect March 27,
2000
- Faculty Computer Initiative 2000 - Paul distributed
information on the PC computer packages offered by
Omnitech. The monies will be distributed to the Deans. CaTS
will also be offering PC packages for student and personal
purchases sometime within the next month.
V. Other Items
Barbara Denison reported the approval by Provost Moore for
the purchase of an additional T-1 line for the university as
discussed in the February meeting.
