UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTTEE
MEETING MINUTES
November 18, 1999
I. Distributed Learning Update - CTL
Dan DeStephen distributed copies of the Distributed Learning
Status Report (see Attachment). He discussed issues 1 - 9
with the committee. Terri Klaus reviewed issues 10 - 12.
Dan addressed the "Future Issues" to be discussed in
upcoming meetings, especially item #1 "Balance between
centralized and decentralized aspects of distributed
learning". Dan DeStephen will form a committee to review
and revise the list of procedures submitted by the original
Distance Learning Committee. Donna Hamilton will attend the
College of Nursing's meetings regarding their future
distance learning programs.
II. CaTS Update - Paul Hernandez
1. The request submitted to NSF to support high performance
networking as part of an Internet 2 school has been reviewed
by NSF and recommended for funding.
2. Y2K - The University is ready. Contingency plans are in
place to address any potential problems that might occur.
An open forum was held today for the university to discuss
personal preparedness for the Year 2000 with approximately
40 attendees.
3. Microsoft License - Many students are checking out
licenses in the Library. Office 2000 disks will be
available for distribution Spring Quarter 2000.
III. Digital Millenium Copyright Act Update - Vicki Montavon
Vicki distributed the "Digital Millennium Copyright Act
Implementation At Wright State University." A "Termination
Policy" was discussed and agreed upon that after two
confirmed infringements by a user, immediate suspension of
computer privileges will be implemented pending the outcome
of a hearing. If the offender is a faculty or staff member,
the case will be referred to the Provost's office; if the
offender is a student, the case will be referred to the
Office of Judicial Affairs.
After review and several suggested changes, the committee
unanimously approved the policy. In the near future, this
policy will be available on WSU's web page as a link from:

IV. Faculty Computing Initiative
Provost Moore announced that $100,000 will be available with
matching funds from the Deans for the purchase of new
computers. At this time, each of the colleges will now need
to inventory all of their computers and report their
findings to Paul Hernandez by January 12, 2000. This list
should include the number of computers used by full-time
faculty which meet the following guidelines: all machines
below and including Pentium 100's. Barbara Denison will
initiate a memo from the Provost to the Deans urging them to
complete this inventory as soon as possible.
V. New Software License Discussion - Vicki Montavon
Vicki distributed information on software products that
would enable users to convert any document to PDF (Portable
Data Format). The cost of a campus site license for this
software was found to be extremely expensive. Therefore,
anyone interested in these products would need to purchase
them in a de-centralized manner. The web sites for two of
these products are:
