UNIVERSITY
TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE MINUTES
September 9, 1999
I. Distributed Learning Policy Recommendations - Dan DeStephen
Dan distributed the final draft of the 10 recommendations
(in no particular order) made by the Distributed Learning
Committee with regard to distributed learning at Wright
State. The only change was requested by Provost Moore for
Priority Item #2. The second sentence should be revised to
read: "These incentives for bargaining-unit faculty will be
determined through the collective bargaining process." The
UTC members unanimously approved and endorsed the final list
of recommendations. The policy will now be presented to the
Council of Deans. This policy will be posted on WSU's web
page.
II. Electronic Classrooms Update and Discussion - George Frey
George distributed a new draft of the proposal for
electronic classrooms. This proposal is still being
reviewed and revised. Andy Montesano, Center for Teaching
and Learning, explained what is considered to be an
"electronic classroom"; the equipment and software used in
these classrooms; and a list of currently installed
electronic classrooms and those rooms to be installed by
November, 1999. Training information on the use of these
classrooms has been emailed to faculty. Provost Moore and
UTC recommended these classrooms be locked every night by
CTL at 11:00p.m and re-opened before classes in the
morning..
III. Classroom Scheduling and Planning - Dave Sauter
A General Classroom Inventory - Summary Report was
distributed and discussed by Dave Sauter. This will be an
ongoing project with numerous short-term and long-term
changes and improvements being developed for classrooms in
the future. Jeff Vernooy pointed out the need to focus on
students with disabilities when implementing these
improvements.
IV. CaTS Updates - Paul Hernandez
Y2K Update - Terry Anderson reported all critical
administrative systems are on target for completion by
September 30, 1999.
Network outages - Paul distributed a list of "Major Incident
Reports, 10/98 - 9/99". An "incident" is regarded as any
violation of ethical computer use. As of 8//17/99, a major
problem of automated hacking attacks have begun to occur
nationwide. As of this date, the problem has affected the
Chemistry Dept. and all Unix systems in the Math Dept. at
WSU. An effort is now being made to educate the campus
community when managing Unix systems. Training will also be
made available through CaTS. This problem will also result
in a major refinement of the firewall system.
Microsoft Site License Agreement - The process is still in
progress, however, moving slowly. The rumor that Microsoft
would be providing software at no cost on the web was
investigated by the attorneys representing the university
and were told by Microsoft this would not happen.
Therefore, the IUC has signed the contract. The next step is
for each IUC state school to sign an addendum and 4-year
commitment. When this process is complete, WSU will receive
two copies from a Columbus distributor, from which
approximately 1,000 copies will be produced. Student
distribution of this software is scheduled to begin
mid-October/early November.
V. Digital Millenium Copyright Act Update - Vicki Montavon
The committee is finalizing the copyright act along with the
implementation of policies directed at copyright violators.
A final policy should be available to the UTC by the October
14th meeting.
VI. Ohio Learning Network
Kate Carey, who is heading the Ohio
Learning Network effort (formerly TECLink), will be on
campus Tuesday, October 5 to discuss the distance education
efforts. An open session will be held from 1:00 - 2:30p.m.
in Room 342 Dunbar Library for all interested staff from
CaTS, CTL, University Libraries and members of the UTC.
VII. Other Business
College of Education and Human Services will be posting
photos of the Allyn Hall renovation on their web page.
The November UTC meeting has been re-scheduled from November
11 to the third Thursday, November 18 due to Veterans Day
Holiday.
