College Technology Plans: COLA Presentation - Chuck
Taylor
Copies of the draft of the College of Liberal Arts'
technology plan were distributed and reviewed. CEHS PRESENTATION
- BONNIE MATHIES The third revision of the College of Education
and Human Services' technology plan was distributed and reviewed.
The departmental moves from Allyn Hall will impact this plan and
a future revision will be forthcoming. Both plans will be placed
online when URLs are sent to Donna Hamilton to add to the UTC web
page. The UTC web page is at http://www.wright.edu/aboutwsu/orgs/utc/
Barbara Denison and Noel Nussbaum will present their college
technology plans at the next meeting.
Financial Information Systems Presentation - Peter
Cheng
Peter distributed and reviewed the Financial System
Recommendations document from the Financial Information System
Planning (FISP) team. The report is based upon Blackwell
Consulting Services' assessment of WSU's financial system. Eight
university-wide projects were targeted for reworking with
estimated completion by the end of 2004. Additional details are
available from the FISP web site at http://www.wright.edu/internal/fis/
Web Directory Discussion - Donna Hamilton
Donna presented a proposal for UTC approval concerning
WSU's web directory information for all faculty, staff, and
students. It was recommended that the directory will be more
useful with: the addition of majors and classifications as either
graduate or undergraduate to student listings; personal titles
("Dr.," "Mrs.," etc.), position title,
organizational status (faculty, staff, student, or all three),
and campus address added to faculty and staff listings. This
information is currently contained within the printed WSU
telephone directory. No home addresses or home telephone numbers
will be on the web directory for students, faculty, or staff. All
information is pulled directly from the WSU Human Resources'
database.
Following discussion, Donna was asked to investigate how the
directory can list multiple titles for individuals. She will also
survey the Student Affairs Committee, the Faculty Affairs
Committee, the Unclassified Staff Advisory Council, and the
Classified Staff Advisory Council for further input about the
content of the Web directory.
Firewall Policy - Paul Hernandez
UTC reviewed the CaTS Access to Firewall Logs Policy
that secures the network and systems resources against
unauthorized access. Only written requests from the Office of
General Counsel or the Department of Public Safety in the pursuit
of violations of law will be honored.
Y2K Update - Vicki Montavon
Vicki announced that Y2K inventory items requiring
compliance are being resolved and that requests for compliance
statements from approximately 500 WSU vendors are being sought.
The Y2K Task Force learned that Facilities Planning &
Management will have full staffing on the eve of 2000 to ensure
that all systems remain operational. WSU plans to open for
classes on January 4. Vicki also said that plans will be made to
inform the university community about preparations for the
transition to the year 2000.
College GTA/Staff Computer Needs - Barbara Denison
Concerning the trickle-down of lab computers throughout
campus, the UTC representatives for the respective colleges are
asked to send counts of computers needed for Graduate Teaching
Assistant and Adjunct Faculty offices (one computer per office)
to Paul Hernandez. After this is done, departments should send
counts of staff needing computers.
Internet 2 Announcement - Vicki Montavon
WSU's application for Internet2 membership has been
approved as of a February 25 email notification. Annual
membership fees are funded by CaTS, the University Libraries, and
the Office of the Associate Provost for Research. WSU joins a
group of 146 universities in the Internet2 project. Other Ohio
members are Kent State University, Case Western University, Ohio
State University, Ohio University, University of Akron, and the
University of Cincinnati. More information is available from http://www.internet2.edu. A
steering committee will be established to oversee Internet2
projects and activities.
Digital Millenium Copyright Act - Vicki Montavon
Vicki noted that the UTC subcommittee on the Digital
Millenium Copyright Act has met once but is not ready yet to
present its full recommendations to the UTC. As an interim
measure, however, Donna Hamilton has created a link from the
bottom of the WSU home page (copyright information) that provides
the necessary information for copyright owners who wish to notify
WSU of a possible copyright infringement on the campus network: http://www.wright.edu/cwis/copyright.html.
The meeting adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting will be April 8, 1999 from
3 - 5:00 p.m. in Room 315 Dunbar Library.
