- Microsoft has released a new version of Internet Explorer. This new version has been named Internet Explorer Version 7(IE7). IE7 has a completely redesigned interface and security model. This means IE7 not only looks different, but works and handles some web pages differently than the current version. CaTS, CTL, and the University Libraries are testing IE7 for compatibility with web-based campus applications. Compatibility issues have already been found in a number of these applications. CaTS strongly advises against upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 until the compatibility issues have been resolved. IE7 will be deployed by Microsoft in early November. Microsoft will deploy IE7 using the Windows Update feature. Windows Update is how your computer receives important bug fixes and security updates. If your system is configured to use the CaTS-managed Windows Update Server, we will be disabling the automatic distribution of IE7 from Microsoft. To see if your system uses the CaTS Update Server, right click on your My Computer icon and select the Properties option. Next, go to the Automatic Updates tab. If the options on this tab are grayed out, then you are using the CaTS Update Server. If your system is configured to connect to the central Microsoft Windows Update Server, we recommend that you carefully examine updates before installing them to ensure that your Internet Explorer is not upgraded to version 7. Once IE7 is installed, it may not be possible to go back to the older version. CaTS also recommends that users do not deploy this version on home computers at this time either. Watch for more information in the future about support for this update.
- Larry discussed the three phases of the campus wireless project and the timetable for the completion of each phase (see attached map for details).

Beginning Winter Quarter, 2007, behavioral scans for spyware, viruses, malicious behavior, port scans will begin in the residence halls. If any problems are found, the user will be taken off the network until the machine is remediated, at which time the user will be able to get back on the network. This will enforce only WSU supplied wireless infrastructure devices on our network. Beginning Spring Quarter, 2007, all main campus users (including offices, labs, etc.) will be required to authenticate to the network. In the future, remote sites will also be required to comply with this procedure.
