CaTS Updates

Joyce Howes, Information Liason for the WINGS Express Student Services project and WSU faculty, gave a brief presentation regarding the services that are now available and will soon be available to faculty.

The following are two questions asked during the meeting, and after researching the information, Joyce supplied the following answers:

1)  How will information regarding WINGS Express be communicated to former students returning to the university after an extended absence?

Very soon there will be info on the WSU home page about how to see class schedules for Summer 2006 and beyond without needing a UID.  In other words, a way for anyone who's interested to see what courses we offer for a particular quarter.  Of course the current ROX links will continue to be available for Spring 2006.

2)  Will students who unknowingly try to log on to ROX automatically be linked to WINGS instead?

WSU will maintain the ROX address for a year or more, even though no new info will be added to ROX after Spring 2006.  Students who go to ROX will get a message about WINGS Express and how to navigate to the site they need.  This is not entirely worked out, but should be very soon.   Departments should SCOUR their web pages for references to ROX and update as appropriate.  Communications and Marketing will work on this, but they think it's inevitable that some links will be well-hidden and thus overlooked.  Contact CaTS Help Desk for guidance.

Phil Neff

E-mail users are often under the misconception that deleting a message from the inbox or a folder removes it from the system.  Deleting a message simply moves it to the Trash folder, where it sits until that folder is emptied.  Often, these files are forgotten.  Messages discarded as trash still take up disk space. Starting March 15, 2006, CaTS will begin deleting messages that have been in Trash folders for 15 or more days.  This procedure will help efficiently manage e-mail disk space.  Messages that you wish to preserve should be filed in a different e-mail folder.

Larry Fox

It has been decided by CaTS staff that the IPX/SPX protocol should be removed from the WSU Network.  The deadline for this project is June 30, 2007.  Currently this protocol is being used by a handful of Novell Applications, HP Printers and Print Server boxes and the Novell client. Attached is a list of tasks that will need to be completed in order to meet the deadline.

NOTE: The next scheduled UTC meeting will be on Thursday, April 27, 2006 from 3:00p.m. – 4:00p.m. in 315 Library conference room.  There will not be a March meeting.
