CaTS Updates Phil Neff Due to the ever-increasing email SPAM problem, CaTS is evaluating a new service called “Proofpoint”. This service has been in test mode for several months within the CaTS department. The initial success rate for blocking spam has been very high. Testing evaluations by volunteer faculty members will begin January 28th and last for three weeks. CaTS hopes to deploy this product by the end of February to the campus community. If for some reason Proofpoint is objectionable after testing, CaTS is also looking at another spam filter service.
Verne Smith CaTS is aware that our current offerings for mail, calendaring and related services are not meeting the needs of the university. To better understand the features and capabilities needed by faculty and staff, we will be conducting a survey in February to collect feedback. The memo from Paul will be sent to faculty and staff shortly and go into more detail about the interim steps CaTS is taking to enhance services such as the new spam filter and upgrades to the SunOne mail and calendar application used within Wings. See attached draft memo (Attachment 1).
Larry Fox CaTS is deploying wireless Guest Accounts in the Dunbar and Fordham libraries, second floor of Joshi, and the meeting rooms and marketplace in the Student Union. This guest access will use the existing wireless access points, but all traffic will be routed to an external provider. There will be no authentication required for the users, but bandwidth will be limited so only guests of the university should use this service. Students, faculty and staff should continue to use the authenticated service.
Terry Anderson Terry gave a brief presentation to update the committee on the Banner Post-Implementation Project. The presentation can be viewed in the attached Powerpoint document (Attachment 2).
CTL Updates Dan DeStephen announced that registration is now available for the annual SOCHE Conference. This year’s conference “Technology and Education” will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Sinclair Community College. The University will pay the registration fees for those interested in attending. To register, call Tina Scarberry @ x4522.
Bryan Beverly announced Wright State University has activated the iTunes U service. iTunes U is a free digital repository service hosted by Apple that contains University-related digital content, such as audio files, podcasts, and PDF documents. It has been fully operational for password protected classes for several months, but public information is now available. You may know iTunes as Apple's popular online music store, but iTunes U isn't about music. It’s about great content from Wright State that is delivered via the familiar iTunes interface. From university videos, class notes and podcasts to sports and special events recordings, iTunes U allows the University to deliver information in new and exciting ways.
Phil Neff announced that in the near future, support for Netscape will no longer be available. Therefore, Thunderbird will be the provider of choice. An email will be sent out in the near future announcing this change.
An announcement from Mary Clem (CaTS) - As soon as the documentation is completed, an email message will be sent out from the Help Desk regarding use of secure pop and imap from off campus.
The next scheduled UTC meeting will be on Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 3:00 – 4:00pm in room 315 Library.
