Meeting Minutes

In Attendance:  Pam Bowers, Bev Denlinger, D.R. Fannin, Jerry Hensley, Adam Horseman, Jonathan Jackson, Audwin Jones, Megan McCurdy, Teresa Pack, Aaron Skira, Craig This, Sommer Todd, Cindy Vanzant, Jeff Wehmeyer

Absent: Chris Bethel, David Finnie, Steven Johnson, Liane Muhlenkamp, Shiela Nahrgang, Jenny Papadakis, Gretchen Rentz, Courtney Smith, Valita Wilhoite.

Call to Order:  Audwin Jones, Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:07 a.m.

Approval of minutes: The minutes of the May 8, 2014 meeting were approved.

New Business                                  

  • New Representative Introductions
    • Jerry Hensley – “Jerry from CaTS” – 2nd Term (1st in 2008)
    • Teresa Pack – Payroll Manager
    • Chris Bethel - absent
    • Amanda Watkins - absent
  • Annual Report, 2013/2014
    • Power Point summarizing committee work in FY14 along with ongoing and upcoming issues and discussing chair experiences for the year
  • Installation of Jonathan Jackson “JJ” (Chair) and Sommer Todd (Secretary)
    • JJ introduced himself and discussed some items of focus for the coming year including compensation adjustments for unclassified staff, concerns about Chartwells, better understanding of the Ombudsman role, continuing established relationships, and health benefit changes
  • Election of Chair-elect and Secretary-elect to serve 2014/2015
    • Incoming and outgoing representatives are eligible for election
    • A brief explanation of how the election works was given: Nominations are made, nominees accept or decline, a paper ballot takes place by all voting members present – there was no tie and both positions were filled with majority vote

        • for Secretary:  Aaron Skira & Jenny Papadakis (absent)
      • Elected: Chair: Megan McCurdy; Secretary: Aaron Skira
  • USAC Involvement at Graduation- official vote
    • Yes – At a ticketed graduation we would like to see a specific number of tickets set aside for staff to purchase
    • No – To a roped off section, with faculty, for staff representatives wearing gowns
  • Xerox
    • Printers are being inventoried and bar coded for tracking – all to be taken – one station to be printed to in each area
    • This is one of the cost savings initiatives = taking printers from offices to save on machine and ink expenses
    • Trying to limit the amount of color printing
    • Mixed feelings about Xerox methods of cost savings
    • Training to address user issues may be helpful
    • Too many circumventing parties
    • Be kind to staff involved as it is not likely their decision, they are assigned to help with the transition
    • Unanswered Questions:  What about paper and maintenance issues?  If multiple departments are sharing a machine, how do we handle this?
    • Will there be training and explanations after Xerox evaluations are complete
  • Staff Development Day
    • Need unclassified staff volunteers
    • Next Meeting: June 23rd  3 PM  - 182 Millet
    • Aug 7th – Theme: Work and Play – WSU Jeopardy at Lunch & a scavenger hunt
  • HR subcommittee
    • Consisted of chairs of both USAC and CSAC and other unclassified and classified staff
    • Hope to revitalize this committee in early FY15

          • Dr. Sweeney agrees that changes may need to be made and he would be happy to assist
          • Ideas:   Leave as is; Tweak the charter to indicate that USAC is meant to allow for leadership opportunity; Define administration
          • 2 week special notice change – add general note that meeting announcements will follow OH revised code.
          • If charter has to be changed = requires president approval

USAC: The purpose of the Unclassified Staff Advisory Council(USAC) is to represent its members to the university by: promoting their general welfare; advocating for unclassified staff through active participation in university governance structure; reviewing, initiating and making recommendation on relevant university policies and procedures; encouraging and facilitating communication among members; and encouraging professional development opportunities. One of the prime responsibilities of this council is to serve the educational community by creating and maintaining an environment conducive to the teaching, learning, research, and service functions of higher education. The recommendations of the council are submitted to the University President.
