Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce that Fermín Recarte will join Wright State University as the intercultural specialist of our new Latin and Hispanic Culture Center on April 1.

The intercultural specialists for all of our cultural and identity centers play key roles in the university's efforts to create and sustain a welcoming campus and institutional culture that supports diversity, accessibility, equity, and inclusion.

Mr. Recarte will oversee the daily operations of the Latin and Hispanic Culture Center. He will provide programs and activities that promote an understanding of Latin and Hispanic cultures and that facilitate the academic success and personal development of students and the effectiveness of faculty and staff.

Mr. Recarte is originally from the border between Brazil and Uruguay and grew up between two cultures. He has lived and worked in Argentina, Spain, and China and has traveled to many other countries. He has had a varied career spanning the areas of higher education, publishing, and community service.

Since 2017, Mr. Recarte has recruited native English-speaking teachers to teach abroad for Kalon English Schools in Guangdong Province, China. He worked as a Spanish language instructor at Sun Yat-Sen University in Zhuhai, China, and as a Spanish adjunct professor at Butler University. He also served a director of Centro Hispano at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and as assistant director of Hispanic/Latino outreach in the Marketing Department at Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette, Indiana.

Outside of academia, he has served as executive director of the Hispanic Community Resource Center in Frankfort, Indiana, and as publisher and owner of El Gallito Luis, a local Spanish language newspaper in Lafayette, Indiana.

Mr. Recarte earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Portuguese and a master's degree in second language teaching from Utah State University and a master's degree in Latin American literature from Purdue University.
