Letter from the President
 Welcome to Wright State University's 40th Anniversary virtual celebration! That we can mark this important milestone in Wright State's history with a dedicated Web site is just one of the many ways we have advanced. It's been 40 years since the students, faculty and staff of Wright State planted a tree to commemorate the university's founding. This anniversary will be commemorated on the following pages and with numerous special events designed to pay homage to the spirit upon which Wright state was founded.
That spirit, if I had to sum it up in one word, is one of COMMUNITY—the Wright State community of faculty, staff, and students… the community of those who came before us, the retirees and alumni… and the community that surrounds us, and to which we are indebted for our beginnings.
The community that came together 40 years ago with a single-minded intention to develop an institution of higher learning for its populace is the heart of the community we serve today. From there our impact radiates throughout the region, the State and the world.
Like any birthday celebration, this anniversary gives us pause for reflection. You'll see our roots and the evidence of our growth in the photos on these pages. You'll see our founders and those who came after them to bring life to their vision. And hopefully you'll see through them to our future.
Founded for the common, good we remain committed to serving the common good. This year we honor all that has come before, all that is today, and all that we are destined to become. And that is worthy of quite a celebration!

Letter from the Provost
 As a newcomer to the Wright State community, I have a unique perspective on the anniversary celebration the university is undertaking. The stories that are the university's heritage, that make Wright State what it is today, are stories that some of you have heard multiple times. But they are new to me, and listening to them coalesces everything I've read about what holds Wright State together as a cohesive community.
For me, the experience has been like showing up at the birthday party of someone you just met and hearing tales from that person's family and lifelong friends. I feel like I am getting an insider's look at things the way they really are.
There is a generosity of spirit here that shines through these stories. I've been impressed by the range of lives that have been changed by Wright State. I hope you, too, will enjoy reading about Wright State on these special anniversary pages and hearing from faculty, staff and students how Wright State makes a difference in their lives. I look forward to getting to know the university and all of you better.
