HONOR SEMINARS of  Metropolitan Dayton

GUIDELINES

Welcome to the Honor Seminars program! The following rules and procedures have been developed through the years which will make the seminars a more enjoyable experience for everyone concerned.

STARTING TIME

The most important rule to follow is: BE THERE BEFORE 7:00 PM (or BEFORE THE DESIGNATED TIME). This is an essential requirement. In case the lecture is at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the gates for the entrance will be notified. Allow extra ten minutes for checking at the gate. It will allow the program to start on time, and is a courtesy which you owe to the speaker and to your fellow students.

STUDENT HOSTS

Two students are to be hosts each week. They are responsible for bringing the refreshments for our mid-lecture break (10 to 15 minutes). Funds ($15.00 per meeting) will be distributed to the hosts to purchase refreshments. Refreshments usually include: (1) soft drinks (buy big bottles - they will stay cold and ice will not be required); (2) pretzels, potato chips, or cookies; (3) paper cups; (4) paper napkins.

The hosts are jointly responsible for preparing the refreshments when the break starts. Usually a large table will be available. The hosts are responsible for clean-up after the break and for room clean-up after the meeting.

Assignment of hosts will be made by the organizer of seminars (usually in alphabetical order of students' last name).

NAME TAGS

Name tags have been prepared to help us to know each other and to help the seminar speakers address us by name. Please bring and wear your name tag each Thursday. Name tags may be requested at the Air Force Base by the gate guard for admission on those occasions when seminar sessions are held on W.P. Air Force Base.

ATTENDANCE

A signature sheet will be passed around at each meeting to record attendance. A poor attendance record will be justification for dismissal from the Honor Seminars. If you have a continuing conflict on Thursday evenings, it would be better to resign now than to be dismissed. In case of illness or other immediate problems, please call the organizer of your Junior or Senior seminars and excuse yourself from the seminar ahead of time.

LECTURE NOTES

In our seminar meetings, it is important for the students and the speaker to communicate. Taking notes is optional; it is mandatory to be courteous and attentive. If you have a question, please ask it. The seminars will be more enjoyable and more educational with open discussion between the students and the lecturer.

The speakers appreciate interest shown in what they are doing. Even if you have a point of disagreement, please bring it up for everyone to hear. If you enjoy the subject, would like to continue the dialogue, or would like some reference material, I encourage you to personally contact the lecturer either before the lecture, during the break, or immediately following the seminar.

MEETING CANCELLATION OR SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

You will be called in case of a cancellation or special announcement unless there is sufficient time to notify you at an earlier meeting. A phone tree has been attached. I will attempt to announce cancellations due to weather through WHIO radio 1290 AM.

PROFESSIONAL COURTESY

The Honor Seminars consists of scientific lectures which cover a broad range of topics. Some you will find truly engrossing, while others may stir little interest to you. Regardless of how you view the topic, it is your obligation to attempt to obtain some understanding of the nature of the presentation. Therefore, it is incumbent upon you to give the speaker your undivided attention during the seminar. PLEASE DO NOT BRING HOMEWORK OR ANY OTHER WORK TO THE SEMINAR. Since all of our speakers are volunteers, professional courtesy is the least we can do to show our appreciation.

Make it your pleasure to enjoy participating in
and benefit from the Honors Seminars!
